Pune: More than 100 women may have been cheated by Chennai man in marriage fraud, police say

After a Chennai man was arrested for allegedly cheating on a woman in Chinchwad, a Pimpri-Chinchwad police investigation indicated that the suspect may have cheated more than 100 women after contacting them through marriage websites and have swindled them with crores of rupees.

Last week the suspect, Premraj Thevraj, a resident of Chennai, was arrested for allegedly cheating on a woman for Rs 11 lakh into entering into a bogus marriage with her. He had met the woman on a marriage website in April, police said.

Thevraj was arrested after a well-planned operation in which the complainant asked him to come to Pune and a trap was set, police said. During his search, police seized seven cell phones, 13 SIM cards, two Aadhar cards, two PAN cards and two driver’s licenses from him.

Deputy Police Commissioner Manchak Ippar said: “We have checked the phone records of the arrested suspect and the preliminary investigation suggests that he has so far cheated on more than 100 women. We now know that he contacts women through their marriage website page. He even entered into fake marriages or engagements with some of them. He defrauded these women under various pretexts. Our probe is in progress. The total amount by which he may have defrauded these women can reach millions of rupees. “
