Michigan beats Cal State Fullerton to clinch weekend home series

ANN ARBOUR, Mich. – The University of Michigan baseball team received an all-team performance on Saturday (April 9) as the Wolverines beat Cal State Fullerton 8-2 at Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium , to clinch the weekend series against the four-time national champion Titans.

The teams will conclude the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Ted Burton put Michigan ahead in the first inning as his sacrificial fly scored Joe Stewartwho reached a fielder’s pick, advanced to second base on a denial and took third on a wild pitch.

Michigan went 4-0 after three innings as Riley Bertram delivered an RBI single and jimmy obertop a sacrificial fly while another run came home on a baseloaded batter. Cal State Fullerton picked up two of those runs in the top of the fourth as Cole Urman connected with a 2-2 fastball and hit his first homer of the season, a two-run shot, over the wall of the left field.

Clark Elliot factored in a pair of UM runs down the frame to regain the four-run advantage. After Jordan Rogers coming in second on a pair of errors, Elliott recorded an RBI single and then stole second base. Then he took off for third base on a 1-2 pitch to Burton, who sent a helicopter high over the third baseman’s head and rushed to second with an RBI double and a lead. of 6-2.

Fullerton threatened in the sixth, loading the goals on a trio of singles, but Cameron Weston induced a late-inning double play at shortstop, with Bertram making a nifty turn at second. Michigan then increased the pressure in the sixth, scoring twice and pushing deeper into the Fullerton bullpen.

Elliott doubled one out and scored on a single from Stewart, who then stole second and scored on a two out single by Matt Frey to give UM an 8-2 lead.

Weston picked up the win, tying his record at 2-2 this season after a strong 6.0 inning effort in which he allowed two runs on nine hits while striking out six batters, including four straight at some time.

Noah Fox relived Weston and retired the team in the seventh and ninth innings, adding another strikeout in the eighth.

Elliott was on base in all five plate appearances for Michigan, going 2 for 2 with three walks. He combined with Stewart to score six of the team’s eight points.
