Is “Made for Kids” digital content good for your child?

In the digital age, it is almost impossible to keep children away from the screen. However, the content they consume is a bigger thing to worry about.

Talking about the second most watched Youtube channel with over 130 billion views and one of the most popular shows among toddlers “Cocomelon”, many parents think that their children are mesmerized by watching the content.

Speaking to ARY, Noor Nabeel, mother of two, said, “Cocomelon’s rhyme is very different from others, the characters, the animation are so vibrant and captivating.”

A US-based child development specialist, Jerrica Sannes, said the show (Cocomelon) is “hyper-stimulating” for its young viewers.

“Cocomelon is so hyper-stimulating that it acts like a drug, a stimulant,” Sannes posted on Instagram. “The brain gets a dopamine hit from screen time, and the more they watch the show, the more the brain starts to expect that intense level of stimulation.”

A Karachi-based clinical psychologist, Midhat Fatima, has come up with a solution to reduce children’s screen time. She said most parents come to her with the same complaint that every time they try to take their child away from the screen, they become so aggressive and show resistance.

“The easiest way to reduce children’s off-screen time is to reduce it slowly and gradually,” she said. “If you try to kick the habit immediately, the child becomes aggressive and shows resistance,” she added.

Children learn and imitate behaviors by watching and listening to others. This is sometimes called “learning by observation”. Nowadays, accessing smartphones for children is not a difficult task, but long hours of screen time can lead to serious problems.
