KENT- Kent State University football turns 100e season with five home games in 2022. Students are welcomed back to Dix Stadium with a refreshed look and feel as well as improved matchday amenities and expanded dining options. Key dates include Parent and Family Weekend, Homecoming and 50e anniversary of the historic 1972 team.
ARRIVAL AT STADIUM TEN
Arriving at the gates, fans will notice bold new graphics and signage welcoming them to Dix Stadium. The Golden Flashes Club will host Kent State supporters in the newly refurbished Jim and Carolyn Phelan Lounge. Student fans will be led from the tailgating areas through the renamed Gold Zone entrance, with golden pavement and improved signage to guide them to a larger student fan section.
Concessions will still offer the classics, such as hot dogs, burgers and popular meal deals. Flash fans will discover new menu items including beef brisket sandwiches, garlic fries with parmesan aioli, and pretzel-wrapped hot dogs. And now fans can even Skip the tail! New this year, fans in general admission areas can experience a portable chair back seat for a more comfortable gaming experience. Rentals start at just $12 per game, and fans can grab seats through the main west entrance.
The Golden Flashes open the season at home on Saturday, September 17 with Parents and family weekend as they host the Long Island University Sharks at noon. Parents and families will have the opportunity to participate in a pre-tamed tailgate at the Field House just behind Dix Stadium. The tailgate will feature food, games, a DJ and showcases from the Kent State Cheer and Dance teams as well as the Kent State Band.
The home opener of 2022 is a Gold Out! Fans are encouraged to sport Kent State’s finest gold gear.
The 2022 Varsity “K” Athletics Hall of Fame class of nine members will be honored as part of the 43rd induction ceremony on Friday, September 16. The Class of 2022 Hall of Fame will also be recognized during Saturday’s game.
On Saturday, October 1, Kent State hosts Ohio University at 3:30 p.m. in the annual homecoming game. It will be a “blue out” as fans are encouraged to dress in their best Kent State blue. The theme for this year’s reunion is Memories and Milestones featuring special recognition of 50 years of Title IX and women’s sports as we honor many of the pioneers in Kent State women’s athletic history. The festivities begin with a Friday night kick-off in Kent town centre. On Saturday morning, former female athletes will serve as grand marshals of the parade leading up to the All-Alumni Tailgate at Dix Stadium.
CARRIAGE WHEEL RIVALRY
The Cart Wheel Challenge pits Kent State against their local foe, the Zips October 22. The Golden Flashes have won the Wagon Wheel in each of the past three seasons, including a 38-0 road shutout victory last season. The annual rivalry game will be a “White Out”, fans are encouraged to pack Dix Stadium and help the Flashes retain the wheel for the fourth consecutive season.
A special recognition in honor of the 50e 1972 team anniversary, the first Kent State team to win the Mid-American Conference. In addition, all Kent State Fall Sports student-athletes will receive their Varsity “K” letter jackets.
Ball State comes to town on Tuesday, November 1st , in the first of two midweek MACtion contests. This will be our Tribute to Service night, as we honor the brave men and women of the armed forces and first responders. It will also be scout night for all scout troops and local scouts in the community.
Kent State closes the season at home on Wednesday, November 16e against eastern Michigan. The regular season finale will be Senior Night for the Golden Flashes football team and group. This will also be the second annual “Prez D Freeze Out”, with details to follow.
Fans are encouraged to make a plan and arrive early to avoid traffic and take advantage of the pre-game tailgate. Free shuttles will be available for fans who park at the MAC Center or other lots around campus, most are free on game days.
