Calm, Cool Eagles claim 8-0 win to open regional play

IRVINE, Calif. — It’s hard to imagine a better NCAA DII West Regional start for the No. 13 Concordia University Irvine softball team.

As the No. 2 seed, the Eagles probably couldn’t have scripted a better result than their 8-0 win over conference rival Azusa Pacific University.

Hosting the West Regional for the fourth time in the NCAA DII era, the Greens and Ors took a 5-0 lead after three frames and moved away from their solid pitching and solid defense.

D2CCA First Team All-Region Pitcher Katlin Entrup threw a complete shutout and limited the Cougars to just two hits on the day. She struck out four batters and unbalanced the Cougars for most of her time in the circle.

CUI picked up the win with a two-run single by the all-area third baseman Sydney Sprinkle late in the sixth inning to seal the deal.

Lauren Fairchild and Megan Massa each provided an RBI single in the second inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. Madison Urrutia came on as a pinched runner and scored in the third on wild pitch to make it 3-0 CUI.

First-year receiver Kendall Flat was clutch to the plate and provided three base hits. His second single came late in the third and netted two runs to extend CUI’s lead to 5-0.
