Amazon announced this week that its COVID-19 home test kit is now available to U.S. customers.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use authorization to the Amazon COVID-19 DTC test collection kit earlier this year, paving the way for wider use.

“Even as COVID-19 vaccinations continue, widespread access to reliable and affordable COVID-19 tests remains an essential tool in the fight against the spread of the virus,” said Amazon vice president Cem Sibay, in a press release.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

The Direct-to-Consumer Selling Kit can be purchased from Amazon.com for $ 39.99, with Amazon Prime shipping at no cost. It is cleared for use by adults with or without symptoms of COVID-19.

The kit requires sample collection using an inferior nasal swab and recording of the test. While not covered by insurance, the collection kit is FSA and HSA eligible and includes prepaid next day delivery to the Kentucky-based Amazon diagnostic lab. The kits are processed by RT-PCR, generally considered more accurate than antigen tests.

Customers will receive results within 24 hours, available through AmazonDx.com.

Starting Wednesday, customers with zip codes in major metropolitan areas such as Chicago, Boston, Dallas, or Sacramento could order the kit to be delivered by Friday.

Postal codes in other major cities, such as Atlanta or New Orleans, estimated Sunday or Monday delivery times.

Some postcodes in Louisville, Kentucky – about a 90-minute drive from Amazon’s test center – were facing estimated delivery times of six days on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, some postal codes in Portland, Maine could take up to a week to receive the test.

THE BIGGEST TREND

Amazon’s multidimensional approach to healthcare intensified in 2021.

In addition to his home COVID-19 test kits, which he hinted at in May, he also reported a potential shift to other diagnoses, including sexually transmitted infections.

During this time, he began to roll out his telehealth initiative as promised nationwide, signing several clients to his app-based primary and urgent care service.

ON THE RECORD

“The Amazon Collection Kit provides customers with the convenience they expect from Amazon.com by giving them access to COVID-19 testing when and where they need it,” Sibay said in a statement.

“The test collection kit provides very accurate and rapid results, helping clients feel more confident when they return safely to travel, work, go to college, and daily life,” he said. -he adds.
